What does the video compressor do?

Modern phones record video at high resolutions and bitrates, which creates files that are too big to email, attach to a chat or upload quickly. The video compressor re-encodes your video at a lower resolution and bitrate so the file becomes smaller while still looking good on a phone or laptop screen.

All processing happens in your browser. The video never leaves your device, there is no sign up and no watermark is added.

How to compress a video

  1. Drop a video onto the upload area or click to choose one.
  2. Pick the output resolution: original, 1080p, 720p, 480p or 360p.
  3. Choose a quality level, or select Custom bitrate and type a value in kilobits per second.
  4. Check the estimated size in the summary table.
  5. Press Compress video and wait for the progress bar to finish.
  6. Compare the original and new size, preview the result and download it.

Settings explained

  • Resolution sets the shorter side of the picture. A 1920 x 1080 video set to 720p becomes 1280 x 720. Videos are never enlarged.
  • High quality, Balanced and Smallest file choose a video bitrate that suits the new resolution.
  • Custom bitrate gives you full control when you need to hit a specific size.
  • Audio bitrate can be lowered to 64 kbps for speech, which saves a little more space.

How long does it take?

The compressor plays the video once and records it with the browser’s built-in MediaRecorder, so it takes about as long as the video lasts. A two minute video needs roughly two minutes. Keep the tab open and visible during this time. The result is MP4 in browsers that can record MP4 and WebM in others; the note above the tool shows which one you will get.

Which settings should I use?

For sharing in chat apps, 720p Balanced is a good start and usually cuts phone videos to a fraction of their size. For email, try 480p or Smallest file. For screen recordings with text, keep a higher resolution and use Balanced so small text stays sharp.

If the new file turns out larger than the original, the source was already well compressed. Choose a lower resolution or the Smallest file option and try again.

Private compression on any device

Many online compressors upload your video to their servers, which is slow on mobile data and risky for personal footage. Here the work happens on your own phone, tablet or computer. The tool also works offline once the page has loaded, and the original file is never changed, so you can try several settings and keep the version you like best.

Frequently asked questions

How much smaller will my video get?

It depends on the source. Phone videos recorded at 1080p or 4K often shrink by 60 to 90 percent at 720p Balanced. The tool shows an estimate before you start and the real saving afterwards.

Why does compression take as long as the video?

The browser records the video while it plays, which is the only way to re-encode video without uploading it or loading a large library.

Is there a file size limit?

There is no fixed limit. Very long videos take a long time because processing is real time, so for those a desktop app may be faster.

Does it add a watermark?

No. The output contains only your video.
