What does a VAT and GST calculator do?

Value added tax (VAT) and goods and services tax (GST) are taxes added to the price of most goods and services. Businesses often need to add the tax to a net price to quote a customer, or take the tax out of a price that already includes it to see the net figure for their books. This calculator does both. Enter an amount and a rate, and it shows the net amount, the tax and the gross amount at once.

How to calculate VAT or GST

  1. Choose Add tax if your amount is before tax, or Remove tax if it already includes tax.
  2. Enter the amount.
  3. Pick a preset, such as UK standard 20% or India GST 18%, or type any rate yourself.
  4. Read the net, tax and gross results, which update as you type.
  5. Choose a currency symbol if you want it in the results, then copy the summary.

The formulas

  • Adding tax: tax = net x rate / 100, and gross = net + tax. At 20%, a net price of 100 becomes 120.
  • Removing tax: net = gross / (1 + rate / 100). At 20%, a gross price of 120 has a net price of 100 and tax of 20.
  • A common mistake is to remove 20% by taking 20% off the gross price. That gives 96 instead of 100, which is wrong.

Presets included

The presets cover the UK standard and reduced rates, Indian GST slabs, popular EU standard rates such as Germany 19%, France 20%, Italy 22%, Spain 21%, Ireland 23% and Hungary 27%, and other rates including Australia 10%, New Zealand 15%, Canada GST 5% and Ontario HST 13%, UAE 5%, Saudi Arabia 15%, South Africa 15%, Singapore 9%, Japan 10% and Switzerland 8.1%. Tax rules change, so always confirm the rate that applies to your product and date.

GST in India: CGST, SGST and IGST

When you choose an India preset, the calculator also shows how the tax splits. For a sale within one state, GST is divided equally between central GST (CGST) and state GST (SGST), so 18% becomes 9% plus 9%. For a sale between states, the whole amount is charged as integrated GST (IGST). From 22 September 2025, most goods moved to the 5% and 18% slabs with a 40% rate for certain luxury and sin goods. The 12% and 28% presets remain for checking older invoices.

Who uses it

Small business owners, freelancers, accountants, online sellers and shoppers all use VAT and GST calculations daily, whether preparing invoices, checking receipts or comparing prices with and without tax.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove VAT from a price?

Choose Remove tax, enter the price that includes VAT and pick the rate. The tool divides by 1 plus the rate, so 120 at 20% gives a net price of 100.

How is GST split into CGST and SGST?

For a sale within one Indian state, the GST is split equally, so 18% is charged as 9% CGST and 9% SGST. Sales between states are charged as IGST at the full rate.

Can I use a rate that is not in the presets?

Yes. Type any rate from 0 to 100% in the Tax rate box and the preset changes to Custom rate.
