What is a favicon?

A favicon is the small icon that appears in browser tabs, bookmarks, history lists and search results next to your website name. Phones also use a larger version when someone adds your site to their home screen. A clear favicon makes your site easy to find among many open tabs and helps it look trustworthy. This generator creates the full set of files a modern website needs, entirely in your browser.

How to create a favicon

  1. Choose the source: text or emoji, or an uploaded image such as your logo.
  2. For text, type one to four characters, then pick the font, text colour and size.
  3. For an image, choose whether to fit the whole image or fill and crop it, and add padding if needed.
  4. Choose a shape (rounded square, circle or square) and a background colour, or make the background transparent.
  5. Check the previews at every size, then download favicon.ico, single PNGs or everything as a ZIP.
  6. Upload the files to the root folder of your website and paste the HTML tags into the page head.

Files you get

  • favicon.ico containing 16, 32 and 48 pixel images in one file, for browsers and Windows.
  • favicon-16×16.png, favicon-32×32.png and favicon-48×48.png for browser tabs.
  • apple-touch-icon.png at 180 by 180 pixels for iPhone and iPad home screens.
  • android-chrome-192×192.png and android-chrome-512×512.png for Android and installable web apps.
  • site.webmanifest listing the Android icons. Add your site name to it if you like.

Adding the favicon to WordPress

WordPress has a built in option: go to Appearance, then Customize, then Site Identity, and upload the 512 pixel PNG as the Site Icon. WordPress then creates the sizes it needs. If you prefer full control, upload the files from the ZIP to your site root with your hosting file manager and add the HTML tags shown by the tool to your theme header or with a header code plugin.

Tips for a good favicon

Keep it simple. A detailed logo turns into a blur at 16 pixels, so a single letter, a bold symbol or a simplified mark works best. Strong contrast between the symbol and the background helps it stand out in both light and dark browser themes. Look at the 16 pixel preview at its real size before you download. Emoji appear in the style of your device, so an emoji favicon made on a phone may look slightly different from one made on a computer.

Frequently asked questions

Is the favicon.ico a real ICO file?

Yes. The tool writes a genuine multi-size ICO file that contains 16, 32 and 48 pixel PNG images, which all current browsers and Windows support.

Why does the Apple touch icon have a background when I chose transparent?

iPhones and iPads fill transparent areas of home screen icons with black, so the tool gives the 180 pixel Apple icon a solid white background when transparency is selected.

Which image should I upload?

A square PNG or SVG of at least 512 by 512 pixels gives the sharpest results. Other shapes work too: choose Fit whole image or Fill and crop.

Is my logo uploaded to your server?

No. The image is processed in your browser and the files are created on your device.
