Rotate and flip pictures in seconds

Photos taken with a phone held sideways, scanned documents that went in upside down and selfies that come out mirrored are everyday annoyances. This tool fixes them quickly. You can rotate an image by 90, 180 or 270 degrees, straighten it with any custom angle, and flip it horizontally or vertically. A live preview shows the result as you change the settings, and the final image is saved at full resolution.

All the work is done in your web browser, so your pictures are never uploaded and the tool works even on a slow connection once the page has loaded.

How to rotate or flip an image

  1. Drop an image onto the upload area or click to choose one.
  2. Use Rotate left or Rotate right to turn it in 90 degree steps, or press 90, 180 or 270 to jump to that angle.
  3. For a custom angle, drag the slider or type an exact number of degrees. Positive angles rotate clockwise.
  4. Tick Flip horizontal to mirror the image left to right, or Flip vertical to turn it upside down as a mirror image.
  5. Choose an output format and press Download image.

Features

  • Quick rotation in 90 degree steps with no loss of pixels.
  • Custom angles from 0 to 359 degrees for straightening horizons and scans.
  • Horizontal and vertical flips that can be combined with rotation.
  • Transparent or coloured corners for custom angles.
  • Live preview and full resolution download in PNG, JPG or WebP.

What happens to the corners?

When you rotate by a multiple of 90 degrees the picture simply swaps its width and height. Any other angle tilts the rectangle, so the tool makes the canvas larger to fit the whole image and leaves empty triangles in the corners. Keep Transparent corners ticked to leave them see-through, which works with PNG and WebP. Untick it to fill them with the colour of your choice. If you save as JPG, which has no transparency, the corners are filled with the chosen colour automatically.

Common uses

Fix sideways phone photos before posting them online, correct scanned receipts and documents, mirror a selfie so the text on a shirt reads correctly, straighten a slightly tilted horizon in a landscape, or create a mirrored version of a graphic for a design. Designers also flip product photos so that items face toward the text on a page.

Tips

To straighten a crooked photo, try small angles such as 1 to 5 degrees or 355 to 359 degrees, then crop away the corners with the Image Cropper. Save as PNG if you want no extra compression at all.

Frequently asked questions

Does rotating reduce image quality?

Rotations by 90, 180 and 270 degrees and flips move pixels without changing them. Custom angles need resampling, which can soften fine detail slightly. Saving as JPG or WebP also adds compression.

Why is my image bigger after rotating by a custom angle?

The canvas grows so the whole tilted image fits inside it. The extra corners are transparent or filled with your chosen colour.

What is the difference between flip and rotate?

Rotating turns the image around its centre. Flipping mirrors it, so text appears reversed. Flip horizontal swaps left and right; flip vertical swaps top and bottom.
