What is a URL slug?

A slug is the part of a web address that identifies a specific page, written in a readable form. In example.com/blog/best-hiking-boots, the slug is best-hiking-boots. Good slugs are short, lowercase, use hyphens between words and contain the main keyword of the page. They help visitors understand a link before clicking it and give search engines a clear signal about the topic.

How to create a slug

  1. Type or paste your page title, product name or heading.
  2. Choose the separator: hyphen (recommended) or underscore.
  3. Optionally remove common stop words like “a”, “the” and “of” to keep the slug short.
  4. Copy the slug and paste it into WordPress, Shopify or your CMS permalink field.

You can also paste several titles, one per line, to create many slugs at once.

What the generator does

  • Converts all letters to lowercase.
  • Replaces accented letters with plain ones, so “Café Crème” becomes “cafe-creme”.
  • Turns “&” into “and” and removes other symbols and emoji.
  • Replaces spaces and punctuation with a single separator and trims extra separators at the ends.
  • Can limit the slug length so it stays short.

SEO best practices for slugs

Keep slugs between three and five words where possible. Include your main keyword, but do not stuff it in several times. Avoid dates in evergreen content, because they make the page look outdated later. Once a page is published and indexed, avoid changing its slug; if you must, set up a 301 redirect from the old address so you keep your rankings and links.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use hyphens or underscores in URLs?

Use hyphens. Google treats hyphens as word separators, while underscores can join words together, so hyphens are the recommended choice.

Should I remove stop words from slugs?

Removing words like "the", "a" and "of" makes slugs shorter and cleaner. Keep them if removing them changes the meaning.

Does it support non-English characters?

Accented Latin letters are converted to their plain versions. Other scripts are kept when possible so the slug still makes sense.
