What is an image cropper?

Cropping removes the parts of a picture you do not want. You can cut away distracting edges, zoom in on a subject, straighten the composition or change the shape of a photo to fit a specific space, such as a square profile picture or a wide website banner. This cropper lets you draw the area to keep directly on the image with a mouse, finger or stylus, or type the exact position and size in pixels.

Your image is processed in the browser on your own device, so it is never uploaded and the result is ready instantly.

How to crop an image

  1. Drop an image onto the upload area or click to choose one.
  2. Pick an aspect ratio: Free, 1:1 square, 4:3, 16:9 or 9:16.
  3. Drag on the image to draw a selection. Drag inside it to move it, or drag a corner handle to resize it.
  4. For exact results, type values into the X, Y, Width and Height fields, measured in pixels of the original image.
  5. Press Crop image to see the result, then Download.

Features

  • Drag to select with mouse, touch and pen support.
  • Preset aspect ratios that keep the selection in shape while you resize it.
  • Numeric fields for pixel perfect crops, kept in sync with the selection.
  • Rule of thirds guides inside the selection to help with composition.
  • Full resolution output: the crop is taken from the original image, not the preview.
  • Format choice: keep the original format or save as PNG, JPG or WebP.

Which aspect ratio should I use?

A 1:1 square suits profile pictures, product thumbnails and many social media posts. 4:3 is the classic photo and tablet shape. 16:9 matches widescreen video, YouTube thumbnails, presentation slides and most website hero banners. 9:16 is the tall format used for phone stories, reels and short videos. Choose Free when the shape does not matter or when you want to set an exact size yourself.

Cropping tips

Place your main subject on one of the guide lines instead of dead centre for a more natural look. Leave a little space in the direction a person is looking or moving. Remember that cropping reduces the number of pixels, so a tight crop of a small image may look soft when displayed large. If you need a specific final size, crop to the right ratio first and then use the Image Resizer to set the exact dimensions.

Social networks also crop images automatically when they do not match the expected shape. Cropping to the right ratio yourself means you decide what stays in the frame instead of leaving it to an algorithm.

Frequently asked questions

Does the cropper work on phones and tablets?

Yes. You can draw, move and resize the selection with your finger, and the numeric fields work on any device.

Is the cropped image lower quality?

No. The crop is cut from the original full size image, not from the smaller preview on screen. Only the pixels outside the selection are removed.

Can I crop to an exact pixel size?

Yes. Type the X and Y position and the width and height into the fields below the image. Values are in pixels of the original image.
