What does an image converter do?

Different places expect different image formats. Some upload forms only accept JPG, a design tool may export WebP that an older program cannot open, and a logo might arrive as an SVG when you need a PNG. An image converter re-saves a picture in a new format so it works where you need it. This tool converts to PNG, JPG and WebP, and it can read PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF, BMP and SVG files, plus other formats your browser can display.

The conversion runs inside your browser, so your files stay on your device and the process is quick even for a batch of images.

How to convert images

  1. Drop one or more images onto the upload area or click to choose them.
  2. Select the format to convert to: PNG, JPG or WebP.
  3. For JPG and WebP, set the quality. For JPG, choose a background colour to fill any transparent areas.
  4. Press Convert.
  5. Download each converted file individually, or use Download all.

Supported conversions

  • PNG to JPG for smaller photo files that every program accepts.
  • JPG to PNG when a tool needs a lossless file.
  • WebP to JPG or PNG for older software that does not support WebP.
  • JPG or PNG to WebP for faster websites.
  • SVG to PNG to turn a vector logo into a regular image.
  • GIF and BMP to PNG, JPG or WebP. Animated GIFs keep only their first frame.

Choosing the right format

JPG is best for photographs and is accepted almost everywhere, but it does not support transparency. That is why the converter asks for a background colour: transparent pixels are filled with it, white by default. PNG keeps every pixel exactly and supports transparency, so it suits logos, icons, screenshots and diagrams, though photo files can be large. WebP supports both photos and transparency with smaller files than JPG or PNG, and works in all current browsers.

Good to know

Converting a JPG to PNG will not restore detail that JPG compression already removed; it only stops further loss. SVG files without a fixed size are converted at 1024 pixels on their longest side. If your browser cannot save a format, which can happen with WebP on some older devices, the tool tells you which format it saved instead.

Because each file is converted on your device, there are no daily limits, no watermarks added to your images and no waiting in a queue. Close the page and nothing is left behind.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert several images at once?

Yes. Add up to 30 images and they are all converted to the format you choose. Each file gets its own Download button, and Download all saves them one after another.

What happens to transparent backgrounds when converting to JPG?

JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you pick. It is white by default.

Does it convert animated GIFs?

It converts the first frame of an animated GIF into a still image. Animation is not kept.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Your browser does the conversion on your device, and no image is sent to a server.
