Floor Plan Sketcher
Draw rooms on a grid, see sizes and areas, export a PNG plan.
What is the floor plan sketcher?
The floor plan sketcher is a simple drawing board for room layouts. You draw rectangular rooms on a grid, add wall lines, doors and windows, and the tool labels every room with its width, depth and floor area. It is meant for quick planning: working out whether a sofa will fit, showing a builder the layout you have in mind, or comparing two ways to divide a space. It works with a mouse on a desktop and with your finger on a phone or tablet.
How to draw a floor plan
- Pick your units (metres or feet) and the grid scale, for example 1 square = 0.5 m or 1 square = 1 ft.
- Choose Room and drag on the grid. The room snaps to the grid and shows its size as you draw.
- Choose Select, tap a room and type its name in the panel below the plan. Drag a room to move it, or drag a corner handle to resize it.
- Use Wall to draw extra wall lines, and Door or Window to tap a marker onto the nearest wall or room edge.
- Press Export PNG to download an image, or Save plan to keep a JSON file you can open again later.
Features
- Snap grid with an adjustable square size in metric or imperial units.
- Live dimensions: each room shows its width, depth and area, and the list below the plan adds up the total floor area.
- Doors and windows that snap to walls, with flip and rotate buttons for the door swing.
- Undo and redo, zoom buttons, a fit button and a pan mode for small screens.
- Autosave in your browser, plus JSON save and load so you can move a plan between devices.
- Private: the drawing stays on your device and is never uploaded.
Good uses for a quick floor plan
Homeowners use a sketch to plan furniture, flooring and kitchen layouts. Renters use one to check whether their furniture will fit before moving. Small contractors and handymen use a dimensioned sketch to agree the scope of work with a client. Estate agents can rough out a layout for a listing, and students can practise reading and drawing plans.
Tips for accurate sketches
Measure each room wall to wall at floor level and note the longest dimensions. Choose a grid square that divides your measurements evenly: 0.25 m or 0.5 m works well in metric, and 1 ft in imperial. Draw the outside rooms first, then fill in the inner rooms so the edges line up. Remember that the areas shown are the inside of each rectangle you draw. If rooms overlap, the overlap is counted twice, so keep rooms side by side. For permits and construction, ask a professional for a measured drawing.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use the floor plan sketcher on my phone?
Yes. The canvas fits the width of your screen and responds to touch. Use the Zoom buttons to zoom and the Pan mode, or drag on empty space in Select mode, to move around.
Is my plan saved?
The plan is saved automatically in your browser's local storage on this device. To keep a copy or move it to another device, use Save plan to download a JSON file and Open plan to load it again.
How accurate are the room areas?
Areas are calculated exactly from the rectangles you draw and the grid scale you choose, so they are as accurate as your measurements. They are estimates for planning, not certified floor areas.
Can I draw rooms that are not rectangles?
Rooms are rectangles, but you can build L-shaped or irregular spaces by placing two or more rooms side by side, and draw any extra walls with the Wall tool.
