What is a discount calculator?

A discount calculator tells you what you will actually pay when an item is on sale. Enter the original price and the discount, and it shows the final price, how much you save and the total discount percentage. It also handles the trickier cases shoppers meet every day: an extra discount on top of a sale price, a fixed amount off rather than a percentage, and sales tax added at the till.

How to use the sale price calculator

  1. Enter the original price and, if you like, choose a currency symbol.
  2. Choose whether the discount is a percentage or a fixed amount, then enter it.
  3. Optionally enter an extra discount percentage, such as a coupon applied after the sale price.
  4. Optionally enter the sales tax rate if tax is added at checkout.
  5. Read the final price, the savings and the step by step breakdown, and copy it if needed.

Find the discount percentage

Switch to the Find discount % tab when you know both prices but not the percentage. Enter the original price and the sale price, and the tool works out the percentage off with the formula (original – sale) / original x 100. If the new price is higher, it tells you the percentage increase instead.

Features

  • Percentage or fixed amount discounts.
  • Stacked discounts calculated in the right order.
  • Optional sales tax applied to the discounted price.
  • Reverse mode to find the percentage between two prices.
  • Clear breakdown that shows every step.

Why 20% plus 10% is not 30%

Stores often advertise an extra percentage off sale prices. The second discount applies to the already reduced price, not the original. On a 100 item, 20% off gives 80, and a further 10% off 80 is 8, so you pay 72. The total discount is 28%, not 30%. The calculator shows the true combined percentage so you can compare offers fairly.

Smart shopping tips

Compare the final price, not the percentage, when choosing between offers, because a bigger percentage on a higher original price can still cost more. Check whether the advertised price includes tax; in the United States and Canada tax is usually added at checkout, while in the UK, EU, India and Australia shelf prices normally include it. Shop owners can use the same tool to plan promotions and check the margin left after a discount. Before a big sale, enter your cost price as the sale price in reverse mode to see the largest discount you can offer without losing money.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage discount?

Multiply the price by the percentage and divide by 100 to get the amount off, then subtract it from the price. For example, 25% off 120 is 30 off, so you pay 90.

Is tax added before or after the discount?

This calculator adds sales tax after all discounts, which is how most shops charge it.

How do I find the discount between two prices?

Use the Find discount % tab. Enter the original and sale prices and the tool shows the percentage off and the amount saved.
