What is FAQ schema?

FAQ schema is structured data that tells search engines a page contains a list of questions with answers. It uses the FAQPage type from schema.org and is usually written in JSON-LD, a block of code inside a <script type="application/ld+json"> tag. Search engines, voice assistants and AI answer tools can read this markup to understand your questions and answers clearly, without guessing from the page layout.

How to create FAQ schema

  1. Type your first question and its answer.
  2. Click Add question for each extra pair, and use Move up or Remove to arrange the list.
  3. Read the validation hints and fix anything flagged.
  4. Copy the JSON-LD script from the first tab and paste it into your page.
  5. Open the HTML preview tab to copy a matching FAQ block, so the same questions are visible to visitors.
  6. Test the page with the Google Rich Results Test or the Schema Markup Validator.

Features

  • Valid FAQPage JSON-LD with Question and Answer items, safely escaped.
  • Unlimited questions that you can add, reorder and remove.
  • HTML FAQ block using simple details and summary elements that work without JavaScript.
  • Live preview of how the FAQ looks as an accordion.
  • Validation hints for empty fields, duplicate questions and HTML tags Google does not allow in answers.
  • Minify option for a compact one line script.

Does FAQ schema still help SEO?

In August 2023 Google limited FAQ rich results, the expandable questions under a search result, mainly to well known government and health websites. Most sites no longer get that extra space in Google. The markup is still valid, it is still read by other search engines and tools, and it clearly describes your content. A good FAQ section also helps visitors directly, answering objections and reducing support emails. So it is worth adding where it fits, as long as you do not expect a guaranteed visual boost in Google.

Rules to follow

Every question and answer in the schema must also be visible on the page. Do not use FAQ schema for advertising, for questions users can answer themselves, as on a forum, or for content that is not really a question and answer. Keep answers complete but concise, and avoid repeating the same FAQ on many pages of your site. In WordPress and Elementor, paste the script into an HTML widget or your theme header for that page only.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I put the JSON-LD code?

Anywhere in the page HTML, in the head or the body. In Elementor you can paste it into an HTML widget on the same page as your visible FAQ.

Can I use HTML in answers?

Google allows a few tags in answers: links, bold, italic, line breaks, paragraphs, lists and headings. The tool warns you if an answer contains other tags. The HTML preview shows answers as plain text.

Will my page get FAQ rich results in Google?

Probably not, unless it is an authoritative government or health site. Google narrowed FAQ rich results in 2023, but the markup remains valid structured data.
