What is keyword density?

Keyword density is the share of a text taken up by a particular word or phrase. If an article of 500 words uses the word “coffee” 10 times, the density of “coffee” is 2 percent. Years ago, some site owners stuffed pages with the same phrase to try to rank higher. Modern search engines see that as spam. Today, density is useful in a different way: it shows you what your text is really about, reveals accidental repetition and helps you check that your main topic is clearly covered.

How to check keyword density

  1. Paste your article, product description or page copy into the box.
  2. Optionally type a target keyword or phrase to see how often it appears.
  3. Choose whether to ignore stop words and numbers, and set the minimum number of uses.
  4. Read the three tables for single words, two word phrases and three word phrases.
  5. Download the full results as a CSV file if you want to work with them in a spreadsheet.

Features

  • One, two and three word phrases counted separately, so you see topics as well as single terms.
  • Stop word filter that skips phrases starting or ending with words such as “the”, “and” or “of”.
  • Target keyword check with count and density for an exact phrase.
  • Sentence aware: phrases are not joined across full stops, so the results make sense.
  • CSV export of every phrase, not just the top 25 shown on screen.
  • Private: your text is analysed on your device and never uploaded.

How density is calculated

For each phrase, the tool multiplies the number of times it appears by the number of words in the phrase, then divides by the total word count. A two word phrase used 5 times in a 500 word text has a density of 2 percent. This shows how much of the text the phrase occupies.

What is a good keyword density?

There is no magic number, and Google has said it does not use one. As a rough guide, if your main phrase sits well above 3 percent, the text may read as repetitive. If it does not appear at all, readers and search engines may not be sure what the page covers. Use the phrase tables to find related terms you already use, and add natural synonyms and supporting topics instead of repeating one keyword. Write for the reader first, then use this checker to tidy up.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ideal keyword density for SEO?

There is no ideal number. Use your main phrase naturally, usually somewhere around 0.5 to 2 percent, and focus on covering the topic well rather than hitting a target.

Which stop words are filtered?

Common English words such as the, and, of, to, is, with and about. With the filter on, single stop words are hidden and phrases that start or end with one are skipped.

Does it work with other languages?

Word and phrase counting works for any language that separates words with spaces. The stop word list is English only, so turn the filter off for other languages.

Is my text stored?

No. The analysis runs in your browser and the text is never sent anywhere.
